Processions of Holy Week

The evening processions leading up to Easter are an ancient tradition for the town. Three religious societies (Compagnia S. Antonio, white dressed; Buona Morte in black and Compagnia del Gesù in blue), established between the 16th and 17th century, dressed in the traditional hooded cloaks and carrying statues, representing a moment of the the passion of Jesus, parade along the main streets of the city.

Horse Race

The origins of this event date back to the last centuries. It takes place every third Sunday in June, the feast day of the Madonna delle Grazie del Rivaio in Piazzale Garibaldi. On this day, the three Rioni (districts: Rione Cassero, Porta Fiorentina and Porta Romana) parade through the streets in historical costume, waving flags, and terminate the event with a horse race. The previous day is dedicated to propitiatory dinners, selection and coupling of the horses.

Live Nativity scene

This sacred re-enactment takes place on the Sunday before Christmas and Boxing Day, and winds it way through the most characteristic streets of the old town. Many Castiglionese interpret holy characters dressed in period costume. For the occasion, the term «denarius castiglionensis» (Castiglionese money) was coined, with which one can buy food from the taverns.
